project overview

I led the 2-year evolution of an enterprise AI assistant ecosystem through Talkwalker’s acquisition and integration into Hootsuite. I transformed a basic Q&A help tool into a multi-mode, context-aware AI assistant (Lumen Agent), while designing the premium customization and access-rights infrastructure for its B2B monetization layer (Wisdom Studio). In parallel, I advocated for and led the frontend migration to Hootsuite’s native Bento Design System.

the challenge

Scaling a conversational AI tool across a complex data platform introduced four interconnected design challenges:

  • Context & Spatial Constraints: The agent started as a floating panel designed to preserve visibility of the underlying data. As capabilities expanded, the same constrained space had to accommodate conversation history, settings, and new interactions without overwhelming the user.

  • Algorithmic Routing Multiplicity: As capabilities grew, the agent required distinct operational modes—ranging from global Quick Search to localized Page-Aware and Widget-Aware scopes. Each mode demanded its own prompt libraries and specific UI behaviors, which had to be seamlessly integrated into the existing floating container.

  • Enterprise Governance & Monetization: To monetize the feature via Wisdom Studio, we needed to design a secure, multi-tenant settings shell. This console had to allow enterprise brands to build custom agents and assign restricted access rights to specific teams.

  • Corporate Merger & Alignment: Following Hootsuite's rebranding and product integration, the experience needed to align with Hootsuite's platform patterns and transition toward its native Bento Design System, merging with native tools like Owly GPT under the new unified Wisdom product in Hootsuite suite.

DESIGN EXECUTION

DESIGN EXECUTION

Working in cross-functional alignment with BE, FE, and Product Management, I drove the ecosystem's redesign through a multi-fronted execution:

  • Floating Canvas Space Optimization: Operating within the strict constraints of the floating panel, I engineered a highly compact, tabbed architecture. I designed a nested 'Saved Conversations' ledger to support deep multi-session research workflows without expanding the panel's physical layout footprint.

  • Dynamic Mode-Specific Routing: I mapped the interaction patterns for localized situational triggers. The interface now dynamically updates its prompt libraries and behavioral states based on the user's location—activating Page Awareness on Topics Analytics and Widget Awareness on Dashboards and Reports.

  • Bento Design System Migration: I proactively advocated to the PM and leding the frontend migration of the AI experience to Hootsuite's native Bento Design System, replacing fragmented patterns with reusable components and aligning the experience with the broader platform. This effectively eliminated design debt and streamlined future engineering deployment cycles.

  • Wisdom Studio Monetization Engine: Designed the enterprise configuration and access-control experience that enabled organizations to create, manage and distribute custom AI agents across teams.

conclusion

The Lumen Agent ecosystem demonstrates how product design can bridge complex backend machine learning capabilities with corporate monetization objectives during major market transitions. By implementing context-aware routing states and a responsive floating workspace, the feature significantly boosted product adoption. Strategically, the proactive migration to the Bento design system drastically mitigated cross-platform implementation overhead, establishing a unified interface foundation that prepares the product to scale smoothly alongside Hootsuite's global enterprise suite.
