project overview

Redesigning the interface architecture for the legacy X32 console firmware and establishing adaptive visual asset frameworks for the next-generation WING mixer. My role focused on delivering production-ready graphics under extreme embedded hardware constraints, optimizing complex audio routing layouts, and ensuring iconography legibility across mixed display resolutions.

the challenge

Live audio engineers operate under extreme time sensitivity where operational errors cause show failures. We had to improve interface usability within rigid hardware constraints: an 800×480 display, no GPU rendering capabilities, a shared 64-color indexed palette, nd tiny channel LCD strips with severe pixel limitations that caused standard iconography to blur. For the WING console, the challenge was screen scalability: creating a unified visual language that remained perfectly legible across both high-resolution main touchscreens and tiny, low-resolution channel LCD strips.

DESIGN EXECUTION

Collaborating closely with engineering teams, I delivered highly optimized interface systems tailored to each platform's constraints:

Working within firmware constraints, I transitioned the X32 layout execution from full-screen renders to a modular asset pipeline, processing all components screen-by-screen via an indexed 64-color workflow in Photoshop to eliminate rendering lag. I overhauled the complex audio routing interface into a clean, grid patching model. For WING, I built a scalable icon library from 24px to 60px and refined assets pixel-by-pixel for consistent contrast and legibility across display sizes.

X32

conclusion

This project demonstrates how meticulous asset optimization can extend the commercial lifecycle of legacy hardware without requiring physical component changes. By resolving the critical routing friction on the X32 and delivering an adaptive asset pipeline for the WING’s mixed-resolution displays, the interface directly reduced cognitive load and setup times for audio professionals. The updated architecture aligned design intent with embedded system budgets, creating a performant, error-free interface suite for live production environments.
